Swanage is one of the easiest and most scenic day trips from Bournemouth, especially if you take the Purbeck Breezer 50 bus. You get the coast-road feel without having to fight for parking, and on the classic route the bus runs via West Cliff, Westbourne, Sandbanks, Shell Bay and Studland before reaching Swanage.

The simple version

  • Use the Purbeck Breezer 50 timetable.
  • Board in Bournemouth, commonly from Bournemouth Railway Station or the central Bournemouth stops shown on the live timetable.
  • Ride through Westbourne, Sandbanks, Shell Bay and Studland.
  • Get off at Swanage Bus Station for the beach, pier, shops and Swanage Railway.
  • Check the return times before wandering off for fish and chips. This is the important bit, obviously.

Why take the bus?

The drive to Swanage can be beautiful, but in summer it can also mean traffic, ferry queues and the small matter of finding somewhere to park when everyone else has had the same bright idea. The Breezer lets you treat the journey as part of the day out, not just the bit before the day out.

The route is especially good if you want to hop off around Sandbanks, Shell Bay or Studland, then continue on to Swanage later. For most visitors staying in Bournemouth hotels, it is a relaxed way to see a different stretch of Dorset coast.

What to do when you arrive in Swanage

  • Walk down to Swanage beach for a traditional seaside afternoon.
  • Visit the pier and seafront for views back across the bay.
  • Take a trip on the Swanage Railway if you want the full steam-train day out.
  • Head towards Durlston Country Park if you fancy a longer walk and sea views.
  • Keep it simple: beach, chips, ice cream, bus back. Hard to improve on that.

Things to check before you go

Bus times, stops and ferry arrangements can change, particularly during roadworks or summer service changes. Before travelling, check the current Morebus Breezer 50 timetable and any live service updates. If your trip depends on the Sandbanks ferry, it is also sensible to check the Sandbanks Ferry updates.
